Espresso Martini

This recipe is for you on a Friday afternoon. It is just what you need to keep you going, and give you that kick off the couch. It is refreshing, and it is simple. Believe me, I am by no means a master of the cocktail. But this is the first, and one of the few that I have mastered, after being shown step by step by a good friend.

Serves: 1 martini
Preparation Time: 5 minutes


Ingredients

+ 1 1/2 oz coffee liqueur (I prefer Illyquore Coffee Liqueur, but Kahlua is fine – it is just a little sweeter)
+ 1 oz vodka
+ 1 oz freshly brewed coffee
+ a dash of simple sugar syrup, to taste *

* To make a simple sugar syrup: Bring sugar and 1 cup of raw sugar to boil in a saucepan over high heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Boil without stirring for 1 minute. Let cool. Pour into a cool jar and store in your fridge for up to two months.

Equipment

+ Cocktail shaker, or Boston shaker
+ Jigger – this is essential for precise measuring of small quantities. It typically has two cone-shaped metal cups conjoined at the narrow ends. The most useful ones come with a 1 1/2 ounces side (1 jigger), and 1 ounce side (1 pony).
+ Martini Glass

Method

Chill a martini glass by filling with ice. Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with a cup of ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled Martini glass. If you are feeling decadent, serve with three whole coffee beans on top.
